Can you explain the meaning of this TypeScript code snippet?

interface Configuration {
    [input: string]: any;
}

This is really puzzling to me, the 'input' is declared as a string type with any value?

Appreciate your help.

Answer №1

When objects implement the Options interface, they become indexable. This means that a key of type string can be used to access any value.

According to https://www.typescriptlang.org/docs/handbook/interfaces.html:

Indexable Types

We can define types that we can access like a[10], or ageMap["daniel"]. Indexable types have an index signature indicating the types we can use for accessing the object and their corresponding return types.

For example:

interface StringArray {
    [index: number]: string;
}

let myArray: StringArray;
myArray = ["Bob", "Fred"];

let myStr: string = myArray[0];
