Contrasting EventEmitter and Output Decorators in Angular-Cli

Is there a reason why EventEmitter and Output Decorator are meant to be used in conjunction with each other? I'm having trouble distinguishing between the two.

If they are intended to work together, wouldn't it make more sense to have just one decorator that can emit and bind to selectors wherever needed?

I would greatly appreciate any clarification!

Thanks in advance!

Answer №1

EventEmitter can be thought of as a specialized version of Subject.

The annotation @Output() is used in Angular to designate a field as output for event binding.

In Angular Dart, it was possible to substitute the use of EventEmitter with a Stream (which is similar to a Subject). However, in recent versions of Dart Angular, EventEmitter has been completely removed. It is worth exploring if this approach also works in Angular TypeScript.

There were discussions about expanding the functionality of EventEmitter in a way that may conflict with Subject, leading to the creation of a custom class. However, there have been no indications that this change will actually take place.

EventEmitter is a powerful tool that allows you to create your own custom events, trigger these events with emit, and subscribe to them in order to react accordingly.

@Output() provides a way to propagate these events from child components to their parent components:

child.Component.ts

  @Output() myEvent: EventEmitter<string> = new EventEmitter<string>();

parent.component.ts

<app-child-component (myEvent)="reactToChildEvent($event)"></app-child-component>

UPDATE :

You can utilize the EventEmitter on its own, without the need for @Output(), to emit events from a service to all subscribed components or within the same component itself.
