This has left me baffled. The initial signature appears identical for each function <A, B>(f: (a: A) => B).

Regarding fp-ts, it seems like the selection of the lift() overload depends on the type of argument passed in for F, such as Functor3<>, Functor3C<>, Functor2<>, or Functor2C<>. These distinctions allow the compiler to make a decision.

Just a heads up, as mentioned by @Sam in a comment, the return type of lift() is not factored into the choice of overload. It's possible that the function returning another function may be causing some confusion.
