Ensuring the robust typing of Vue component props through the powerful combination of the Composition API and TypeScript's typing system

I'm currently working in Vue with the composition API and Typescript.

Does anyone have tips on how to effectively use Typescript for strongly typing component props?

Answer №1

According to the documentation on defineComponent, Troy Kessier's answer may not be entirely accurate:

If your component only uses setup and no other options, you can pass the function directly […]

It's not about two ways of declaring properties, but rather two methods of declaring a component, each with its own approach to typing props.

For the classic way with TypeScript, you can utilize PropType:

import { defineComponent, PropType } from 'vue'

export default defineComponent({
  props: {
    someOptionalString: String,

    someRequiredString: {
      type: String,
      required: true
    },

    someObject: {
      type: Object as PropType<MyObjectType>,
      required: true
    },
  },

  // …
})

Note: PropType assists in providing the correct TypeScript type to the props parameter in the setup function. However, the actual Vue type for the props remains Object and there isn't currently a way to enforce more precise typing for these props passed by the parent component.

In the official documentation, it is explained that props can be typed in two different ways:

Option 1: Define props using argument annotation

import { defineComponent } from 'vue'

export default defineComponent((props: { foo: string }) => {
  props.foo
})

Option 2: Alternative method

import { defineComponent } from 'vue'

export default defineComponent({
  props: {
    foo: String
  },
  setup(props) {
    props.foo // <- type: string
  }
})
