How to eliminate file nesting in Visual Studio 2017

Is there a way to prevent certain file types from being nested within other files, such as .ts files not being nested beneath .html files?

I came across this request, but has anyone found a solution to achieve this?

Answer №1

To avoid this issue, you can manually modify the toolSettings.json file in Visual Studio by navigating to

C:\Users(youruser)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_(yourinstanceid)\toolSettings.json

Deleting the .ts array from the extensionToExtension section will prevent them from being nested under HTML files. You can apply the same fix for .js and .css files as well.

Keep in mind that this modification may get undone if Visual Studio is reinstalled or updated.

Answer №2

It seems that in Visual Studio 2017 version 15.6.0, the file name has been changed to .filenesting.json.

I am currently using the Enterprise edition, but results may vary for different versions.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\{YOUR-VS-VERSION}\Common7\IDE\Extensions\Microsoft\Web Tools\ProjectSystem\.filenesting.json
