What could be causing the malfunction when using TypeScript's generic T with any?

The playground demo

The diff:

A:

function<T extends { status: number }> () {}

B:

function<T = any> () {}

the B does not have access to T's property, while the A function only accesses T's status.

Thank you

Answer №1

The functionality is operating precisely as intended. Attempting to retrieve the status attribute from a variable of type T is not feasible unless you can confirm that T possesses a status property.

<T extends { status: number }>
signifies that irrespective of the explicit value of T, it will always contain a status property.

<T = any> implies that T has the potential to be anything. How would you go about extracting the status attribute from a boolean, for example? This would lead to a runtime error. Therefore, typescript generates a compile-time error to prevent such actions.
