What distinguishes ES6 from ES2015 in the TypeScript compiler option `--libs`?

Can you explain the distinction between ES6 and ES2015 in the TypeScript compiler option here? Also, what does --libs do?

Answer №1

They are essentially synonymous, stemming from a regrettable naming choice made during the early stages of JavaScript standardization.

ES2015 is essentially interchangeable with ES6, just as ES2016 is essentially the same as ES7. While --lib in ES2015 may offer some finer distinctions through distinct definition packages, it ultimately boils down to a matter of semantics.

In due time, everything will likely be unified under the banner of

ES20xx</code, erasing any acknowledgement of the existence of <code>ESx
