I'm a bit confused about ES6 and ES2015. In TypeScript, there are two type declarations available for them: lib.es6.d.ts
and lib.es2015.d.ts
. Can someone explain the difference between these two? And which one is recommended to use?

ES6 and ES2015 are essentially the same thing. In TypeScript, the target
option as well as libraries with the same names are expected to function similarly - which they do.
lib.d.ts
and lib.es6.d.ts
are library files that build on each other. They are created from a compilation of various other libraries, some of which can be found here:
The files within this directory are used to generate lib.d.ts and lib.es6.d.ts.
These files include specific spec libraries along with the DOM
library.
The distinction between lib.es6.d.ts
and lib.es2015.d.ts
is that the former is automatically included when the target
is set to ES6
, whereas the latter is used in conjunction with the lib
being set to ES6
. Meaning, specifying --target ES6
is equivalent to
--target ES6 --lib ES6,DOM,DOM.Iterable,Scripthost
.
The ES2015
library offers more granularity, allowing for the substitution of ES6
or ES2015
with a subset of features when needed: such as ES2015.Core
, among others.
