When defining a stripe in TypeScript using process.env.STRIPE_SECRET_KEY, an error of "string | undefined" is encountered

Every time I attempt to create a new stripe object, I encounter the error message "Argument of type 'string | undefined' is not assignable to parameter of type 'string'. Type 'undefined' is not assignable to type 'string'.ts(2345) string | undefined"

The value for my STRIPE_SECRET_KEY is correctly declared in my .env.local file

import Stripe from 'stripe';
import { NextApiRequest, NextApiResponse } from 'next';

const stripe = new Stripe(process.env.STRIPE_SECRET_KEY, {
  apiVersion: '2020-08-27',
  // Replace with your desired Stripe API version
});

const handler = async (req: NextApiRequest, res: NextApiResponse) => {
  const { email } = req.body;
  try {
    const customer = await stripe.customers.create({
      email: email,
    });
    res.status(200).json({
      code: 'customer_created',
      customer,
    });
  } catch (error) {
    console.log(error);
    res.status(400).json({
      code: 'customer_creation_failed',
      error: error,
    });
  }
};

export default handler;

Answer №1

Always ensure that the string is defined before utilizing it in your code. Here's an example:

const apiKey = process.env.API_KEY == 'production' ? process.env.PRODUCTION_API_KEY : process.env.TEST_API_KEY

if (typeof apiKey !== 'string') throw new Error('API key not found')

const apiService = new ApiService(apiKey, {
  version: '2022-11-15',
})

Answer №2

If you have full confidence in the environment variable always being set, utilizing TypeScript's non-null assertion operator (!) is a way to explicitly declare it as a string.

const paymentGateway = new PaymentGateway(process.env.PAYMENT_SECRET_KEY!, {
  apiVersion: '2021-05-12'
});
