Using Typescript and Angular 5: A guide on trimming an array when its length is less than 5

What is the method to shorten an array if it has less than 5 elements?

This is my JSON data:

[
{
    "type": "aaa",
    "values": [
        {
            "risk": "A"
        },
        {
            "risk": "Q"
        },
        {
            "risk": "M"
        },
        {
            "risk": "New Filters Reports"
        },
        {
            "name": "U"
        },
        {
            "risk": "U"
        },
        {
            "risk": "U"
        }
    ]
}
]

I want to only show 5 "values" on my HTML. How can I truncate "values.risk" after 5 characters?

Answer №1

To retrieve the first n elements from an array, you can use the slice method.

var items = myValues.slice(0, 5);

Here is a complete example:

    var obj = [
        {
            "type": "aaa",
            "values": [
                {
                    "risk": "A"
                },
                {
                    "risk": "Q"
                },
                {
                    "risk": "M"
                },
                {
                    "risk": "New Filters Reports"
                },
                {
                    "name": "U"
                },
                {
                    "risk": "U"
                },
                {
                    "risk": "U"
                }
            ]
        }
    ];

    const firstFive = obj[0].values.slice(0, 5);

    console.log(JSON.stringify(firstFive));
